SCOM MP development from Microsoft announced at SCOMathon 2020

The SCOM 2019 UR2 feature list is clear (read our blog on it here), but what have the Microsoft SCOM Team got planned for MP development? After all what is SCOM without its MPs? Aakash Basavaraj – Program Manager at Microsoft, gave us a heads up on their plans, during SCOMathon 2020 and recapped the key features from the latest MPs:

Monitoring Storage Spaces Direct MP– This MP was actually launched earlier this year to enable your S2D Cluster Monitoring, using an integrated storage system providing greater visibility, as seen in the console below:

Storage Spaces Direct will be the core platform for Hyper Conversion Infrastructure (HCI) - the next generation of OS from Microsoft, due before 2021. So, Storage Spaces Direct MP will become more important, as companies adopt HCI.

Azure MP – also shipped earlier this year, just add your subscriptions, then choose which services you want to monitor and you’ll see all your Alerts in your SCOM console along with much better dashboards - sounds simple right! Plus, this MP comes with an intuitive dashboard on Event Console so you can easily monitor Alerts and performance.

Hyper-V 2019 supporting MP - this MP was just released, adding Hyper-V 2019 support, which has been eagerly awaiting by many - you can get it here.

Azure SQL Managed Instance MP - also just released. We will be reviewing this MP in a dedicated blog very soon so watch this space. Although not strictly mentioned at SCOMathon by Aakash we thought it worth including. Download it here.

What about future development?

There was a strong focus on remote working in the MPs Microsoft are currently developing (which makes a lot of sense given that as we write this, most counties are still in some form of lock-down or working from home)

Office 365 MP – this will include some major improvements to bring: Exchange, Teams, and SharePoint, up to date to enable high-level monitoring.

The SCOM Team are working hard to keep pace with Office 365 development to ensure the MP keeps up as new features are added.

Windows Server Remote Access (RRAS), Windows Virtual Desktop MPs - no details or timescale where shared but Aakash mentioned that MP dev for these things is in the pipeline (interesting as Kevin Holman recently released a RRAS MP to add 2016+2019 support).
